What Should I Wear? Fashism CEO Tells You How to Dress Your Figure
Have you ever gone shopping and after trying outfit after outfit on, you’re left feeling like nothing fits like you’d want it to? I know for me personally, I’ve run into this issue many times with two different garments–jeans & dresses. When I’m shopping for either of these two items, the people at the fitting rooms can expect to be seeing me coming in & out of the dressing rooms with different options in my hands until I finally find the perfect fit. Over the years I’ve come to learn that instead of working against my body type, I need to work with it.
Truth is, many women have trouble finding a garment that flatter their body type.

The following tips for dressing five classic body shapes — in her own words:
What You Should Wear for your body type…
Personally, this is my favorite shape. The absolute key to dressing for the hourglass is accentuating the waist. Whether it be belted pants or form-fitting sheath dresses, someone with an hourglass shape will want to flaunt her curves. Someone who is curvy would probably also want to shy away from dresses that are too short. Being voluptuous is sexy, so combining form-fitting clothes, with revealing hemlines and plunging necklines can be a one-way ticket for hoochie mama city. Sweaters, v-necks, pencil skirts and belts — these are all items that a curvy woman should have in her closet.
Upside-Down Pear (or Inverted Triangle)
This shape is the opposite of a pear — heavy on top and small on bottom. Women with this body shape usually have strong shoulders and small hips. So to balance you out, it is advisable to stay away from things that add bulk to the shoulders — things like shoulder pads, puff sleeves and boat necks should be avoided. To beef up your bottom half, try skirts that flare. A-line or other skirts or pants with some volume are good. Stay away from too-slim jeans and pencil skirts.
This shape is a little tougher. Someone with an apple figure, who is a little round around the midsection, might do well with a shift dress. A shift dress hangs on the shoulders and skims over the bust and hips, and hopefully masks a larger tummy. This type of dress is the best for someone who would rather show off their arms and legs than midsection. Also, if you want to try and define your waist with a belt, try wearing it a little higher than where you think your waist is. If you accentuate the slimmest part of your middle with a belt and have a full skirt on bottom, you can accentuate your waist and hide your problem areas. Also, showing cleavage always helps divert eyes to your assets and away from your insecurities.
This body shape is often referred to as “boy shape” because column-shaped people tend to be thin with not much volume in the bust or hips. Sure it’s fun to have curves, but column shapes are lucky because they can wear a lot of cool, drapey clothes that will hang on them luxuriously. Bias cut dresses are a great choice because they are very chic and hang very beautifully on the body. Some of our column-shaped sisters can even get away with not wearing bras. Because column shapes are slim, they can wear almost any pair of jeans as well. Also, try wrap dresses and v-necks to give the illusion of more curves. Stay away from dresses and tops that are too tight, as they will flatten you out.
While we are on the subject of fruit, let’s think about the pear shape. The pear shape is someone who is slimmer on top and fuller on bottom. Just like the apple, you should try to accentuate what you love about your body. If it is the top half, then show it off! Maxi dresses are great, because they are fitted and detailed on the top and have a long skirt that covers the entire leg. These dresses can be a great way to show off your neck, arms or back without feeling too exposed. For pants, a pear shaped woman should probably stick to straight, wide-leg trousers that aren’t too tight. These will help to make a nice, clean line and hide problem areas. Also, A-line skirts are great for hiding hips and thighs.
