Chado Ralph Rucci’s Hand-Crafted Elegance

After several seasons of putting on intimate shows in their Soho showroom, design house Chado Ralph Rucci returned to a big space in Lincoln Center. The presentation touches stayed the same: as they have in past seasons, models walked a blindingly white runway against a mirrored backdrop.

The looks: Understated, hand-crafted couture of the likes rarely seen outside of Paris. A signature Chado touch is deconstructed tulle that has been shredded and then re-built into panels, and hand-applied ostrich feathers as accents.

The surprises: Dresses that suggested columns of minimalism from the front, were cut open all the way down the back to reveal a waterfall of glittering sequins.

The mood: Models walked to Maurice Ravel’s ‘Bolero,’ with the music building as the looks became more elaborate and dramatic, and the last model exiting the stage precisely as the song ended.

The response: A room full of devoted Chado clients, including social Iris Apfel, would applaud dresses as they saw they saw them, with the cheers growing louder as the final gowns came out. When the designer came out for his bow, he was promptly given a thunderous ovation.
